How to Read Your Training Program Like a Professional Athlete
Why Understanding Your Program Actually Matters
Most athletes follow a program without really understanding it. They do what's written, log the session, and move on. But athletes who understand why they're doing what they're doing are more consistent, more engaged, and more coachable and they get better outcomes as a result.
Buy-in drives results. When you know that a particular exercise is building the specific physical quality that transfers to your sport, you're more likely to execute it with intent. When you understand the loading rationale, you're more likely to push appropriately rather than under doing it or going too hard.
The Key Terms Every Athlete Should Know
Sets and reps are the basics: how many rounds of an exercise and how many repetitions per round.
But there are several other terms worth understanding deeply.
RPE (Rating of Perceived Exertion) is a 1–10 scale of how hard a set felt, used to guide loading.
Tempo describes the speed of each phase of a repetition — for example, 3-1-1 means three seconds down, one second pause, one second up.
Rest is the recovery period between sets.
Load is simply how much weight is on the bar.
A superset is a form of strength training in which you move quickly from one exercise to a different exercise without taking a break for rest between the two sets.
How we Use our programming app to Actually Track Progress
TrainHeroic is the platform used at Primed Performance and used properly, it's a powerful tool.
Log every set: the weight used, the reps completed, and how it felt.
Use the video submission feature to send technique footage so your coach can provide feedback. And review your personal bests regularly seeing improvements in real numbers is one of the most motivating things an athlete can experience.
Questions Worth Asking Your Coach
A good coaching relationship includes honest communication in both directions.
Don't hesitate to ask why a particular exercise is in your program, or how you'll know when it's time to increase the load, or what a movement is actually preparing you for in your sport.
These aren't dumb questions. They're the questions that turn compliance into understanding and understanding into results.
Training With Purpose, Not Just Presence
The difference between an athlete who turns up and an athlete who trains is the difference between presence and purpose. Showing up is the minimum. Understanding what you're doing and why you're doing it is what pushes the needle.
At Primed Performance, you're never left guessing. Every program is explained, every session has a rationale, and every check-in is an opportunity to ask the questions that make you a smarter athlete.
